The Ashmolean in Oxford opened in 1683 as Britain’s first public museum, and its own visitor page states plainly that entry is free and no booking is required for general admission. The collection runs from Egyptian mummies and Greek sculpture to Raphael drawings and Pre-Raphaelite paintings.

The museum is open from 10am, with last entry at 4pm. A number of its photographic and archive exhibitions are also free, and the site publishes suggestions of free things for families to see and do while they are there.

It is an easy few hours in the centre of Oxford, and there is a rooftop restaurant if you want to make a day of it.
