BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art occupies a converted flour mill on the south bank of the Tyne at Gateshead, opposite Newcastle. It shows changing contemporary exhibitions across several floors and has viewing platforms looking out over the river and the Millennium Bridge.

BALTIC’s own visit page states “Free entry” during opening hours, and adds that donations help “keep our exhibitions free entry and accessible to everyone”. There is no ticket to buy and no membership involved.

Opening days are Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, so avoid a Monday or Tuesday trip. Walk in on the day – no booking needed for the galleries.
