The British Museum on Great Russell Street holds one of the world’s great collections, from the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon sculptures to Sutton Hoo, Egyptian mummies and the Lewis Chessmen. Entry to the museum and its permanent galleries is free.
The museum is open daily from 10.00 to 17.00, with late opening until 20.30 on Fridays, and is closed from 24 to 26 December. Advance booking is recommended at busy times but is not required to get in.
Free gallery audio guides are available through the museum’s own app. Some temporary exhibitions are ticketed separately, so check before you travel if there is a particular show you want to see.
