RNID, the national hearing loss charity, runs a free online hearing check that takes about three minutes and measures how clearly you can pick out speech when there is background noise.

It is aimed at adults aged 18 and over who have not already been diagnosed with hearing loss. You will need headphones or earphones and a quiet spot; RNID notes the check uses white noise, so it is not suitable for everyone with tinnitus.

Go to the RNID page, press the check-your-hearing button and answer the prompts. Results appear immediately and can be emailed to you. There is no charge and no card details are needed.
