Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, founded in 1989 as GW Travel Ltd by Tim Littler and headquartered in Altrincham, Cheshire, is widely recognised as the world's leading operator of all-inclusive, long-distance private rail tours. The Caspian Odyssey is one of the company's most ambitious itineraries: a 16-day journey by private train from Yerevan, Armenia, to Almaty, Kazakhstan, crossing six countries along the ancient Silk Road. Combining private jet transfers with on-board travel, the tour takes guests deep into regions of Central Asia and the South Caucasus that are seldom reached by independent travellers. From UNESCO-listed monasteries in Armenia to the ornate Islamic architecture of Uzbekistan, the Caspian Odyssey offers a carefully curated window onto cultures that have flourished at the crossroads of East and West for millennia.
The itinerary travels east through Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, stopping at some of the most storied cities on earth. Highlights include Lake Sevan and the Geghard monastery complex in Armenia; the capital Tbilisi and the ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe in Georgia; Baku on the Caspian shore in Azerbaijan; and the great Silk Road cities of Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent in Uzbekistan. The journey ends at Almaty, with an excursion to Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan en route, where a traditional cultural festival showcases Kyrgyz sports and eagle hunting. A private performance of Georgian polyphonic singing and an evening at the illuminated Registan Square in Samarkand are among the moments past guests describe as truly unforgettable.
The Golden Eagle is a purpose-built private train designed specifically for remote, long-distance travel in Central Asia and Russia. All guest cabins are fully en-suite and are arranged across three classes:
The train features a restaurant car serving fine dining at every meal, a bar stocked with local and international drinks, and a dedicated cabin attendant for each car. An on-board doctor travels with every departure. All excursions, gratuities, and expert local guides are included in the tour price.
The company launched its first rail tour in 1966 and operated the first private Trans-Siberian Express tour in 1996, hauled entirely by steam across 13,000 km in 28 days. Its flagship train, the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express, was launched in Moscow in 2007 by HRH Prince Michael of Kent. In 2012 the company rebranded from GW Travel Ltd to Golden Eagle Luxury Trains Limited, and in 2015 it took over operation of the Danube Express. Today Golden Eagle operates three signature trains serving destinations across Russia, Central Asia, India, and Europe, with a reputation built on more than three decades of pioneering private rail travel.
The tour crosses six countries: Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. Starting in Yerevan and ending in Almaty, it covers roughly 16 days of travel by private train and private jet transfer.
The all-inclusive fare covers accommodation on the train and in five-star hotels where used, all meals, complimentary drinks from the bar (local and international beers, wines, spirits, and cocktails), guided sightseeing excursions at every destination, expert tour leaders and local guides, all gratuities, and the services of an on-board doctor. Premium wines and champagnes are charged separately.
There are three accommodation grades: Silver Class (twin-berth with en-suite bathroom and shower), Gold Class (more spacious, with separate shower room), and Imperial Suite (the most generous option on board). All cabins have private en-suite facilities.
As of 2026, Golden Eagle Luxury Trains continues to operate the Caspian Odyssey as part of its active programme of Central Asian journeys. Current departure dates and pricing are available directly from the company's website. The brochure listed here was part of an earlier offering and some details may have changed.
The company was founded in 1989 as GW Travel Ltd by Tim Littler in Altrincham, Cheshire, giving it more than 35 years of experience in long-distance private rail travel. It rebranded to Golden Eagle Luxury Trains Limited in 2012.
Golden Eagle operates its own purpose-built private trains rather than booking space on public services, allowing the company to control every aspect of the on-board experience. Itineraries are fully escorted and all-inclusive, covering destinations that are difficult or impractical to reach independently, with expert guides, on-board dining, and a dedicated cabin attendant service throughout the journey.
