People Tree was a pioneering fair trade and organic fashion brand offering stylish clothing for women and men. Founded from the roots of an environmental NGO in Japan in 1991, it grew into a globally recognised label celebrated for combining ethical sourcing with contemporary design. People Tree was the world's first fashion company to receive the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) Fair Trade product label.
Every garment in the People Tree collection was made using 100% organic cotton and other sustainable materials, frequently crafted by hand using traditional skills in developing-world communities. People Tree was the first organisation to achieve GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification for a supply chain based in the developing world, setting a benchmark that the wider industry would later follow. Buying from People Tree meant supporting artisan producers paid fair wages under transparent, humane conditions.
People Tree's collections featured classic stripes, pretty prints, unique textiles and beautiful details suited to both work and weekend wear. The brand partnered with respected designers including Orla Kiely and Zandra Rhodes to create exclusive limited-edition pieces, demonstrating that ethical fashion need not compromise on style or creative ambition.
The People Tree catalogue and e-newsletter gave subscribers early access to new collections, designer collaborations, sales and seasonal offers. Emails included videos, behind-the-scenes stories from producer communities, and style guides designed to help shoppers make informed, values-led choices. At the time of publication, new subscribers received a discount on their first purchase.
