Golden Eagle Luxury Trains - Trans-Siberian Express Brochure

Golden Eagle Luxury Trains is a British company based in Cheshire that has been operating private luxury train journeys since 1989, originally trading as GW Travel. The custom-built Golden Eagle train launched in 2007 and quickly became one of the world's most celebrated private luxury trains. The Trans-Siberian Express journey was the company's flagship tour, covering the legendary route between Moscow and Vladivostok – spanning roughly 9,000 km across Russia and passing through Mongolia. Travelling aboard a train purpose-built for the Russian five-foot broad gauge, passengers enjoyed noticeably more spacious accommodation than standard rolling stock.

The Trans-Siberian Route

The classic Trans-Siberian Express itinerary ran for approximately two weeks, tracing the full length of the Trans-Siberian Railway through some of Russia's most dramatic and historically significant landscapes. Highlights included Moscow, where passengers could take in landmarks such as St Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin; Kazan, home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kremlin Fortress with its striking Kul Sharif Mosque and Annunciation Cathedral; and the shores of Lake Baikal, the world's largest freshwater lake by volume. The journey continued east through Siberian taiga and steppe before reaching Vladivostok on the Pacific coast. Excursions at each stop were guided, with English-speaking tour leaders accompanying the group throughout.

Onboard Accommodation and Service

The Golden Eagle train offered several classes of cabin, all with en-suite shower facilities – a rarity on long-distance rail journeys. Cabin grades included Silver Class (approximately 60 sq ft), Gold Class (approximately 77 sq ft with double or twin configurations), and Imperial Suites (approximately 120 sq ft with king-size beds, sitting areas, and twin picture windows). The most exclusive option was the Romanov Suite, a private car with a dedicated kitchen, personal chef, and private guide. All grades included L'Occitane toiletries, bathrobes, and slippers. Two dining cars served fresh meals using locally sourced ingredients, and a social lounge offered complimentary beverages for Gold and Imperial guests. A doctor travelled with every departure, providing 24-hour medical cover at no extra charge.

What Was Included

Tour pricing covered all accommodation on the train and in hotels during the journey, all meals from dinner on the first night through to breakfast on the last day, guided off-train excursions, transfers, an experienced tour leader, and the services of an onboard doctor. International flights, visas, travel insurance, and excess baggage were the responsibility of individual travellers. The train accommodated a maximum of around 75 passengers per departure, ensuring a relatively intimate group experience. The company celebrated 30 years of operation and built a strong reputation among luxury rail travellers worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Golden Eagle Luxury Trains still run the Trans-Siberian Express through Russia?

No. Golden Eagle Luxury Trains no longer operates journeys through Russia. Following changes in the political situation, the company redirected its Golden Eagle train to Central Asia, where it now runs Silk Road itineraries through countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. The Trans-Siberian Express route as described in this brochure is no longer available.

What cabin classes were available on the Trans-Siberian Express?

The Golden Eagle offered four main accommodation grades: Silver Class (compact en-suite cabins), Gold Class (larger cabins with double or twin beds), Imperial Suites (the most spacious option with king-size beds and sitting areas), and the exclusive Romanov Suite – a private car with its own kitchen, chef, and guide. All cabins included en-suite shower rooms, which distinguished the Golden Eagle from most long-distance trains.

Was a doctor included in the price?

Yes. A qualified doctor travelled with the train for the entire journey and was available to all passengers around the clock. Consultations and basic treatments were provided at no additional cost. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses was mandatory for all passengers.

How long did the Trans-Siberian Express journey take?

The standard Trans-Siberian Express itinerary lasted approximately 14 days (two weeks), covering the route between Moscow and Vladivostok with stops along the way including Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Lake Baikal, and Ulan-Ude before crossing into Mongolia and then continuing to the Pacific coast.

What currency was accepted on board the Golden Eagle?

Payments on board were accepted in US Dollars and Euros, in cash only. The main items passengers needed to budget for on board were additional bar purchases beyond the included beverages, laundry services, and souvenirs. Most meals and guided excursions were included in the tour price.

Was the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express suitable for travellers with limited mobility?

Passengers were advised to be moderately fit, as off-train excursions often involved walking on uneven surfaces, steps, and uphill gradients. However, joining excursions was entirely optional – passengers could remain on the train without any penalty. The train itself had limited space for large hard-sided suitcases, so soft-topped luggage was recommended.
