Mango - Single Parent Holidays Newsletter

Mango Single Parent Holidays (c/o Tracks n Trips) offered a programme of holidays designed exclusively for single parent families, both in the UK and overseas. Run by Jackie Lewis and Steve Barber from their base in Shropshire, Mango set out to make holidays welcoming and fun for lone parents and their children.

Holidays in the UK and Overseas

Mango aimed to offer a holiday to suit every single parent family, whatever their interest. Within the UK there were holidays close to the coast for those who enjoyed the sun, sea, surf and beach, while breaks in the Yorkshire Dales, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons suited families who preferred outdoor activities.

For families seeking sunshine overseas, Mango offered holidays in Jersey, Mallorca, Malta, Morocco and Cyprus. Each location offered plenty to do alongside the sunshine, including:

  • Walks and boat rides
  • Train and tram journeys
  • Snorkelling and diving
  • Beach games, which Mango called Beach Olympics

There was also a ski holiday to Romania during the February half term, with a package that included all ski hire, two ski lessons a day, full board and a trip to Dracula's castle.

How the Holidays Worked

All Mango holidays operated as group holidays accompanied by a Mango co-ordinator who stayed with the group throughout. The co-ordinator organised games, activities and visits, met everyone after breakfast to plan the day together, and met again before dinner so the group could eat together.

  • A discount for every child of every age sharing with just one adult
  • Flights from the airport of your choice wherever possible
  • A meet and transfer service at the destination airport
  • The choice to buy your own flight or have Mango purchase it
  • An ATOL Licence (no. 6200) meaning your money was always secure
  • Meals either included or arranged together

Accommodation varied across hostels, cottages, lodges and hotels, in the countryside and at the seaside, with something to suit every taste and budget.

Why Mango Was Created

Mango was established because Jackie and Steve, both former single parents themselves, understood that holidaying as a single parent family could feel lonely and difficult when surrounded by two parent families. The aim was for parents to join in the fun and to meet other single parents in the same situation, with groups soon becoming one big family.

Mango also ran activities for parents and children who wanted to get out and do things together, including walks, visits to theme parks and wildlife parks, steam train rides, barbecues, bike rides in the park, glass etching, pottery-making and bowling.
