Witney Travel The Azores & Madeira Brochure

Destination Portugal (Witney Travel) drew on 31 years of experience specialising in travel to Portugal, Madeira and the Azores. This brochure introduced the remote and unspoilt Azores islands, set in the middle of the Atlantic some 1,000 miles west of Lisbon.

The Azores: nine volcanic islands

The Azores comprise nine volcanic islands reputed to be part of the legendary lost continent of Atlantis. They were discovered in the fifteenth century by Portuguese navigators on their way to the New World, and named "Açores" after the hawks that constantly circle the islands, which the sailors mistook for vultures.

For five hundred years the Azores remained almost totally unspoilt, offering tranquillity ideal for those wishing to escape the pressures of modern day life. The leisurely pace of agriculture and fishing was only recently interrupted when the Autonomous Government recognised that tourism could bring financial benefits. Holidaymakers remained relatively few, although in high summer Portuguese from the mainland quickly filled the small number of beds available.

Cuisine and regional flavours

The cuisine of the Azores is rich and varied, with regional cooking built upon distinctive island produce.

 • Fish dishes, seafood, meat and cheese
 • Pineapple grown on the islands
 • The famous Verdalho wines of Pico and Graciosa, once the table wines of the Tsars of Russia
 • Newer wines including the excellent Terras de Lava

A speciality not to be missed is the "cozido" at Furnas on São Miguel, where sealed cooking pots filled with a mixture of meats, vegetables and spicy sausages are buried in the ground for five or six hours and slowly cooked by the steam rising from the sulphurous springs.

Traditional handicrafts

The traditional handicrafts of the Azores reflect the folklore and activities of the islands.

 • Scrimshaw – ornamental objects made from whale bone and teeth, usually miniatures of whaling boats
 • Artificial flowers made from fish scales
 • Wicker work and glazed earthenware
 • Delicate carvings made from fig pith
