BrightHouse was a UK high street retailer that allowed customers to obtain top brand household goods on affordable weekly, fortnightly, or monthly payment plans with quick and simple credit options. With over 280 stores and more than 260,000 customers across the UK, the company made it straightforward for people to access the technology, furniture, and appliances they needed without a large upfront cost.
BrightHouse stocked an extensive selection of leading brand products across several categories, including Smart 3D LED TVs, laptops, washing machines, cookers, dishwashers, fridges, sofas, and bedroom furniture. Their range also covered computing, gaming, mobile phones, audio equipment, and cameras, meaning most household needs could be met under one roof.
One of BrightHouse's key selling points was speed and convenience. Most products could be delivered and installed within 7 days of the order being placed, keeping the process simple from selection through to having the item set up in the home.
BrightHouse was originally launched in April 1994 by Thorn EMI under the name Crazy George, intended as a sister brand to Radio Rentals. The chain was rebranded as BrightHouse in 2002 and grew to become one of the UK's best-known weekly payment retailers. The company entered administration in March 2020.
BrightHouse sold a broad range of household goods including televisions, audio equipment, cameras, laptops, gaming consoles, mobile phones, washing machines, cookers, dishwashers, fridges, sofas, beds, and bedroom furniture — all available on credit.
Customers could spread the cost of their purchase over weekly, fortnightly, or monthly payments. The credit application process was designed to be quick and simple, making it accessible for those who preferred not to pay the full price upfront.
BrightHouse aimed to deliver and install most products within 7 days of purchase, offering a convenient end-to-end service from the store to the customer's home.
At its peak, BrightHouse operated over 280 stores across the UK, serving more than 260,000 customers nationwide.
BrightHouse entered administration in March 2020, and its stores subsequently closed. The company had faced financial difficulties and a significant volume of compensation claims in its final years.
Yes. BrightHouse's consumer credit activities were regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). In 2017 the FCA directed the company to pay refunds totalling approximately 14.8 million pounds to around 249,000 customers in connection with certain historic lending agreements.
